👞The first found remains of Biblical Sandals date back to the 2nd century B.C. A widow, Bavta Bat Simon or Babatha, fleeing Roman persecution, hid in a cave in the Judean Desert, which was later called the Cave of Letters.
With her, she brought her personal belongings: legal contracts, letters, yarn, and most importantly —a filthy sandal. Consisting of a three-layer leather sole held together by a strap between the toes
This archeological find can now be found in a glass display case in the Israel Museum.
